ABOUT OUR GUITAR PROGRAM
Guitar instruction is offered as a weekly 30, 45, or 60 minute private lesson on electric or acoustic guitar. Beginner, intermediate, and advanced lessons are available in a variety of different styles such as rock, pop, classical, r&b, jazz and more. We also offer lessons in electric bass and ukulele. Whatever your goals are, our teachers are here to help you and customize a lesson plan for you.
BEGINNER GUITAR
Beginner guitar students of all ages will learn how to read standard and tab notation, play melodies, chords, and improvise. All students are highly encouraged to bring recordings of their favorite songs, band, or players to learn their favorite songs. Method books will likely be supplemented to ensure a well-rounded musical development.
INTERMEDIATE/ADVANCED GUITAR
Guitar lessons for intermediate to advanced students will focus on expanding technique, repertoire, theory, and learning to transcribe. Intermediate students have completed beginner method books and are starting to learn more complex pieces of music.
ADULT GUITAR
Our guitar teachers can help give you the skills, knowledge, and confidence to take out your guitar or ukulele and play your favorite songs for family and friends.
UKULELE & BASS
We have many instructors that also teach such instruments as Ukulele and Bass. The ukulele is also a great instrument for kids and adults to learn. They are affordably priced and easier to play than a guitar, so ukulele lessons are a fun way for kids to get started before taking guitar lessons. Be sure to ask us about our availability if you are interested in one or more of these instruments.

OUR TEACHERS
We give our instructors the tools they need to succeed, from streamlining the scheduling and administration process for the students, to an accurate and up-to-the-minute instructor calendars with features to communicate quickly with other instructors and staff.
Our music teachers at our premier studio in North San Diego County teach rock, blues, country and classical guitar on electric, acoustic or bass guitar. Beginner guitar students learn chords, simple songs, melodies, sight reading and basic theory. Intermediate and advanced students...the sky's the limit!
​Our guitar teachers make it fun by teaching you the songs you want to learn in addition to building a solid foundation from a method book. We balance musicianship and fun by making sure that each lesson you are challenged with a new technical or theory concept, but then end with something fun such as your favorite riff or song.

We use a variety of guitar method books to accomplish this and encourage students to bring ipods or CDs to their lesson so their instructor can help them learn the music that inspires them. Our North San Diego music studio is fully stocked with amps and stereos, so students only need to bring their guitar, their music, and a lesson plan notebook with them each week.
Our teachers make it a priority to get to know you on a personal level and to become familiar with your personal musical needs and goals. We do not treat every student the same in terms of what and how we teach. A seven year old having their first guitar lesson will have very different needs than a twenty seven year old taking it up again for the 2nd time after having had lessons at a child.
The main reason to choose the Academy as your music lesson provider, is that we are sensitive to the fact that every student is an individual. When enroll at Forte Academy for guitar lessons, we will work with you to make a plan that will fit your needs and musical preferences. At the first lesson your music teacher will ask you about your favorite type of music, and set goals to help you accomplish whatever musical aspirations you have for yourself or your child.

Types of Guitars for Kids
There are various types of guitars but in general we can distinguish between three types: classical acoustic guitar, steel-string acoustic guitar, and electric guitars.

Acoustic Guitar: Classical
First of all, we start with the most popular type of guitar for kids – the classical version. Its name does not mean that this guitar can be only used to play classical songs. Quite in contrary, your child would be able to play every kind of music style with that instrument. The difference to the other models lies in the construction. The classical version has got a larger and a flatter neck. The strings on that guitar are nylon strings which is one of the most important facts when it comes to kid’s guitars. Nylon strings are for children’s fingers much more comfortable and do not hurt as much as steel string in the beginning. If your fingers get used to the strings, they will not hurt anymore. Until then, it is good to consider as many beginners tend to give up when the strings hurt too much. This is why beginners and consequently younger kids should start playing on classical guitars.

Acoustic Guitar: Steel-string
At first glance the classical and steel-string guitars look quite similar, but a closer look reveals that there are many differences.The neck of a steel-string guitar is slimmer than the classical version.

Steel-string guitars have a bright, crisp tone as compared to classical guitars with nylon strings. They are primarily used for rock, country and pop music. It is often the case that guitar beginners start on a nylon string guitar, because strings are much softer and more comfortable to play. As soon as most of guitar players have passed beginner level songs, the majority of them change to an acoustic guitar. There are also acoustic-electric guitars that you may plug into a guitar amplifier allowing the guitar’s volume to be louder. If your child wishes to perform his music in public, an acoustic-electric guitar would be a good choice.
Electric Guitar
Electric guitars differ from other guitars in two ways. The guitar’s body is made from solid wood. Especially for young kids it is an important fact to consider since electric guitars are much heavier. Secondly, they MUST be amplified electronically to hear their sound. This is done by using an amplifier normally connected to the guitar with a wire, called a quarter (1/4) inch cable. Although, kids often tend to want to begin on an electric guitar, parents should know that a classical guitar is mostly the best choice for beginners. If your child is too young, it might be too complicated to handle all the buttons on the guitar and the amplifier. Also, electric guitars use steel strings. Their strings are quite thinner compared to acoustic guitars, and slightly easier to play.

Ukulele
A ukulele is very similar to a normal classical guitar … however, much smaller and lighter. But the biggest difference lies actually in the number of strings. Un-like guitars, an ukulele has only 4 nylon strings instead of 6 strings. The chords on the ukulele are much easier to learn than on the guitar; some of them require just using one finger. Children will progress much quicker on a ukulele than on a normal guitar. A good ukulele is much cheaper than a guitar.
